On Memorial Day, the founder of Ellijay’s Veterans Memorial Bridge and Garden wants people to stop and think about how much has been sacrificed by American troops who fought and died for their country. This will be the sixth year that Sandy Lyons has presented an honorary Memorial Day service at his ever growing tribute to American veterans adjacent to the Ellijay Lions Club Fairgrounds. The service will begin at 11 a.m. Monday, May 26, and should last till around noon. Lyons said everybody is welcome to come early for patriotic music or to have a look at the many engraved marble and paver tributes at the veterans garden site. “We will start early at 10:25 (a.m.) to get people in the proper spiritual mind of what we’re doing,” said Lyons. “I want folks to come see what our country was founded on and I’d like them to read the documentation we have here. ”Representatives from various military branches and community groups will assist with the event. Lyons said local Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, as well as members of the North Georgia Honor Guard, American Legion Post 82 and the Civil Air Patrol’s 507th composite squadron are among those expected to participate.
